Bio

Johanna is a millennial oil painter investigating themes of femininity, perception, and impermanence across two distinct bodies of art: figurative oil paintings that draw from Old Dutch Masters techniques to address contemporary culture, and abstract color field paintings.

Working in translucent oil glazes, Johanna creates luminous compositions throughout her work: Figures turn away, faces become obscured, and everyday objects take on the symbolic weight of memento mori. Her figurative paintings explore how female identity is shaped by projection and commodification, examining the tension between being seen and disappearing from view. Through this interplay of presence and absence, her work invites contemplation of what beauty reveals and what it conceals. Her abstract color field paintings bypass any intellectual narrative to create a purely emotional experience. The soft blends invite the viewer to tune into their inner worlds and dreams and the large scale of the canvas allows the outside world to fade away.

Artist Statement

My work investigates femininity through the language of presence and absence. I paint figures that turn away, faces that become partially obscured, objects that seem to dissolve before our eyes, creating compositions where meaning accumulates in what is withheld as much as what is revealed.

Working in oil, I build translucent layers that recall the atmospheric light of Old Dutch masters. This glazing technique creates luminous surfaces that feel both solid and dissolving, present and ephemeral. The slow accumulation of thin veils of paint mirrors my conceptual POV: how identity is layered, constructed, and always partially hidden from view.

I am interested in how the female body and mind becomes a site of projection and cultural narrative and how it moves between being both subject and object, between embodiment and image, between presence and absence. The shapes of my subjects point to what cannot be fully possessed or grasped. They ask: What remains when form begins to disappear? The refusal of clarity is central to my visual language. I'm drawn to this tension between substance and disappearance, between being fully present and beginning to dematerialize. Beauty itself becomes unstable, threatening to dissolve.

My paintings hold classical beauty and contemporary critique in tension. I want viewers to experience awe while recognizing the complexity beneath the surface, and to pause in that uncertain space between what is seen and what is imagined, what persists and what vanishes.
